Grandmaster Ip’s Snake Form (4 days intensive Workshop) Print

Snake Style-Workshop
International Academy Of Tai Chi Chuan
with Sifu John Ding
16. - 19. June 2009
in Hamburg

The Chueng Kuen Snake Form was devised by Grandmaster Ip to record his knowledge and experience of Yang Ban Hou's approach to training. The knowledge was passed to him as direct transmission during the intensive daily training sessions he had with Grandmaster Yang Sau Chung.

There are two points to note: firstly that not many practitioners know the Yang Style Cheung Kuen (aka Fast Form) - a much more potent, compact and shorter form of the Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan (It is sometimes known as the Fast Form as the movements are practised both slowly and fast, depending on the mood of the practitioner- just like the calm sea which suddenly breaks into stormy weather, with sea water hitting hard against rock); secondly that Grandmaster Ip used the Cheung Kuen as the basis for his 'Snake Style'.

The Form is practiced very differently from the normal long form. It is characterized by:
  • A centre point derived from a three point base i.e. triangle rather than four points, squareClear distinction of substantial and insubstantial (100% weighting on the substantial leg)
  • Most steps are based on the “Lin Che Bo”
  • Closer angular arm posture with the elbow very much in contact with the body.
Hence this Form is much more potent, compact and flexible. This enables the practitioner to develop and concentrate Chi power through further strengthening of our mental, physical and spiritual aspects at a deeper level. Given the power and flexibility, the Snake Style offers the tai chi practitioner the potential of great martial power.
The workshop will look at the complete snake style.
Suitability:
  • Only students who have completed the Traditional Long Form can participate.
  • Open to those who have been learned the Snake form from Master Ding previously. For these people we will be doing corrections and applications.
