Beginning Tai Chi Chuan PDF Print E-mail

If you have not done Tai Chi Chuan before, the experience you face will probably be new and initially quite alien. However, in time you will become more familiar with the Tai Chi way of moving as will you become accustomed to the effects of Chi flowing within the body. It is also helpful to always remember to approach Tai Chi in a relaxed way, and let your interest and involvement develop at its own natural pace. Try not to learn any new postures until you are fully confident with those that you have learnt previously. Work at your own rate and bear in mind that not everything has to be learnt in the first session – quality is always better than quantity.

Master Ding
Master John Ding founded the John Ding International Academy of Tai Chi Chuan (JDIATCC) to preserve and promote the traditional, holistic approach of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan training, following a lifetime's pursuit of excellence in Martial Arts.

JDIATCC tai chi is characterised by a strong emphasis on building health, power and understanding of internal energy through experiential study of Tai Chi's concepts and principles. The result is a system that we hope teaches you strength and calmness in the face of all life's aspects, lightened by a true joy for living.

JDIATCC covers the entire traditional Yang style tai chi syllabus, so no matter how deeply you want to look into Tai Chi, we will be there for you. In addition you will benefit from the unique skills of this generation's JDIATCC teachers and masters who work hard to make the process fun, flexible and inclusive. To us it is all about transmission of the real skill of Tai Chi which is carried from generation to generation by the proper understanding and execution of its concepts and principles. Getting Started PDF Print E-mail

ImageGetting started can be as easy as picking up the phone to talk to the instructor, sending an email or turning up to a class. JDIATCC classes are designed to be friendly and accessible and we don't expect any special experience, knowledge or levels of health or fitness. The basic idea is: if you can stand, you can do Tai Chi.

Most instructors would love you to join in for your first class, as Tai Chi can be as safe and comfortable as you want it to be. However most will be equally happy for you to stay and watch, asking questions when people are available and just seeing if it is for you. It must be said, though, that no amount of watching Tai Chi can convey the feeling of actually doing it. So for a thorough investigation into whether it suits you perhaps 3 or 4 lessons should be taken.

For those that would like to know more, do read further and look at our FAQs and Articles pages.

Cheung Kuen Se Ying - The Tai Chi Chuan Long Fist Snake Form PDF Print E-mail

Master Ip Tai Tak Snake FormTai Chi Chuan is perhaps most well known for its series of co-ordinated and linked movements. These methodical and measured movements are known as the Tai Chi Chuan forms. They can vary in their length and complexity. But despite this, almost all who see its movements synonymously associate them correctly with Tai Chi Chuan. They are as distinctive as they are unique and few mistake them for being anything else. Practitioners are often seen deeply engaged with their form practice - focused and unwavered by distractions. To the uninitiated, forms are often described as moving meditation. But whilst Tai Chi Chuan forms do have their meditative qualities, they play a much greater role to the Tai Chi practitioner.

Yang Style Jian (or Sword) Form PDF Print E-mail

The Tai Chi Jian (or sword) is perhaps the most well recognised weapon in the Tai Chi armoury. This double-edged straight sword forms an important subset of Tai Chi Chuan. It is only ever learnt after solo form training, building upon foundations that should already be well established.

Like Tai Chi Chuan itself, the origins of the Tai Chi Jian are of martial application. The sword has been used in China for military purposes for well over three thousand years. However, contrary to popular belief, the purpose of the Jian was not to simply butcher, hack or dismember. Instead its function was much more subtly direct.

TCAH Issue 66 PDF Print E-mail

TCAH Issue 66

Editorial: Issue 66

I have often heard Tai Chi practitioners saying that they prefer to train Tai Chi on their own with minimal physical contact, believing that if they spend enough time on their own practice, they will be able to obtain the awesome power of Tai Chi Chuan. This is just an illusion. Individual practice is just only one aspect of the training. The other aspect is “gau sau” (in Cantonese) or translated to mean, “exchange hands”. Gau Sau practice will enable you to work with different people of different levels, to help you refine and enhance your Tai Chi Chuan ability. There are various aspects of Gau Sau training such as posture testing, push hands, sensitivity, ta lu, martial applications and many other.  What is often forgotten is that the path of Tai Chi Chuan can only be negotiated through experiential learning. Only by working with people will you begin to feel and discover the various aspects of Tai Chi talked about by masters, effervescent out at different levels of your training. Such feelings can only be felt and not possible to be adequately described in words. Only through this approach, will you be able to harmonise your mind, body and spirit.  Too often have practitioners over intellectualised Tai Chi and subsequently lost their way. By incorporating Gau Sau as part of your Tai Chi training, your standards in Tai Chi will no doubt improved substantially.

Sifu Ding & Sigung Ip
Master Ding Teah Chean (John Ding) has accumulated vast experience and understanding of internal and external Kung Fu systems through a lifelong study of martial arts. He trained at a young age under various Shaolin Kung Fu Masters reaching a high level of skill before devoting himself entirely to the internal system of martial arts. He is one of the few people to have studied intensely and successfully under all three formal disciples of the late Great Grandmaster Yang Sau Chang: Chu King Hung (3rd disciple), Chu Gin Soon (2nd disciple) and Ip Tai Tak (1st disciple). Consequently he is one of the few teachers in the West who can demonstrate the higher aspects of the art and internal energy (CHI).

On the first of January 1998 his long, deep and dedicated approach to the art of Yang Style Tai Chi was rewarded when he was accepted as the first disciple of Grandmaster Ip Tai Tak, making him a 6th Generation lineage holder of Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan through Grandmaster Ip Tai Tak.
