Snake Form Workshop Jul 2010 (Hamburg, Germany) PDF Print E-mail

Here are my reflections and impressions of the snake form workshop with Sifu (Master) John Ding:

This was my second four day Master Class on the Cheung Kuen Se Ying (long fist snake form). It was a hot summer's day in a fully matted Aikido dojo and a group of enthusiastic tai chi practitioners that set the scene for the snake form workshop. As I had attended last year’s workshop, I thought I was fully aware of what lay ahead. The first hour of the first day started with Sifu going through the first posture of the snake form. Then he went straight into posture testing and followed shortly with the self defence applications; this was to set the tone for the rest of the week!

As stated in Master Alan Ding’s article (please refer to ‘Cheung Kuen Se Ying - The Tai Chi Chuan Long Fist Snake Form’ article, jdiatcc.com website, for a more in depth explanation), the snake form was the creation of Sigung (Grand Master Ip Tai Tak). An extraordinary man that formulated the snake form for the development of the tools for fighting prowess.

JDIATCC Health Instructor Course @ JDA Limehouse - June 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Paul Finn, Sarfraz Rajwadkar  and I, Jim Turner, from the JDIATCC Stratford City attended this weekend course at the Limehouse Headquarters in June. Like many others, I found the Health Instructors Course an invaluable opportunity to be able meet other practitioners of JDIATC Short Form, to have the chance to sense other peoples posture and the prospect of being taught by Master John Ding. The weekend is a thorough revision of not only the Short Form but also the warm up exercises and the Chi Kung meditation. The training room is light and airy giving feeling expansiveness, the floor slippery, emphasising need to stay rooted, the tone of the weekend is serious and demanding. Much information is given that requires assimilation and accurate corrections of The Form are expected on an individual basis but underlining all this effort was also a great atmosphere of great enjoyment.

Another great Snake Form workshop in Hamburg.

You always know when you’re standing at the bottom of the hill that the view from the top is going to be great. Even on the way up when you’re slogging though the trees, your view obscured and the track winding upwards, seemingly endlessly, you come to a small spot where the trees break, you can stop and rest, admire the view and think, ‘wow this is great, and I’m not even there yet..’.

Tai Chi for Health Weekend (19-20 June) PDF Print E-mail

The Tai Chi for Health weekend proved to be an interesting mix. Having been a seasoned tai chi practioner for many years now, I find it interesting to come back and re-visit seminars thatI have attended previously. It allows me to re-evaluate my learning and my own concepts of tai chi. We started off with the usual warm up exercises and then moved quickly into looking at key movements in the foundation form. While the foundation form is used as the basis for looking at the health aspects of tai chi, the fundamental concepts remain the same as the tradational long form.

Northeast Weekend Workshop in Hartlepool (21st -23rd May 2010) PDF Print E-mail

The weekend retreat in the northeast in May was hard work, both mentally and physically, but gave us a greater understanding of the form. We found it beneficial to learn the applications of the form in greater detail, testing postures, improving and fine-tuning. Working with people of different levels was helpful, as there were opportunities to both help and be helped. Sifu and the other instructors were always available to clarify and explain the moves.

Open Workshop Karlsruhe 24th – 25th April PDF Print E-mail

There was no special theme this time. Instead a lot of different bits and pieces were brought together such as posture testing, improvement of our rooting, spiral concepts, exercises for softness, Kua movement and application to form one whole picture at the end of the workshop.

As always Master Ding created that special atmosphere where people could work in a concentrated and focused way, take a lot back home at the end of the day and still have fun and make friends at the same time.
